How the day runs

Everything happens at Hollacombe Barn. Nothing to drive between, no gaps to fill, and a bar that stays open until midnight.

  1. 13:30

    Arrival

Park in the top field, follow the flags down the lane. There will be blankets, and someone with a tray of something cold.

  2. 14:30

    Ceremony

Outdoors in the walled garden, weather permitting; in the barn if not. Twenty-five minutes, no hymns, one poem.

  3. 15:00

    Drinks and photographs

On the lawn. This is when the photo booth opens and the gallery starts filling up.

  4. 16:45

    Sit down

Long tables in the barn. Find your name on the plan by the door.

  5. 17:15

    Dinner

Three courses, served family style. Cheese instead of pudding, and pudding as well.

  6. 19:00

    Speeches

Three of them. Ella is doing one. Tom has been told his is too long.

  7. 20:00

    Cake and first dance

Then the band, who are called The Gurt Lush and are better than the name suggests.

  8. 22:30

    Bacon rolls

    Non-negotiable.

  9. 00:30

    Carriages

Last taxis leave from the top of the lane. Book ahead, seriously.

Dress code

Coastal formal

Suits and frocks, but leave the stiff collars at home. The ceremony is outdoors on grass and the wind comes straight off the water, so bring a jacket you actually like and shoes that will forgive a field. Block heels over stilettos. We would rather you were warm at 9pm than immaculate at 2pm.

Questions we have already been asked

Can I bring my children? +

Yes, and we would love to have them. There is a supervised games barn from 4pm with a film and far too many biscuits. If you would rather have a night off, we entirely understand — say so on your RSVP and we will seat you accordingly.

Can I bring a plus one? +

If your invitation names a plus one, absolutely. If it does not, we are sadly at the limit of what the barn will hold. Please do not take it personally; take it up with the fire regulations.

What is the photo thing? +

There is a QR code on every table and on the sign by the bar. Scan it, put in your first name, and you will get three photo missions. Take the photo, upload it, and it appears on the big screen in the barn within seconds. Complete one and you get another. There is a leaderboard. It gets competitive.

Do I have to do the missions? +

No. You can upload photos without one, or not at all. But you will feel left out around 9pm.

Will my photos be public? +

They appear in the gallery on this site, which is unlisted but not password protected. We can remove anything on request — find one of us, or email hello@ellaandtom.example.

Is there a gift list? +

We have lived together for five years and own three colanders. If you would like to give something, there is a honeymoon fund on the RSVP page, but please treat that as genuinely optional.

Any dietary requirements? +

Tell us on the RSVP and the kitchen will handle it. They have done vegan, coeliac and a genuinely severe nut allergy at this venue before.

Is it accessible? +

The barn and the loos are step-free and there is dropped-off parking right by the door. The walled garden is grass and can be soft after rain — tell us and we will make sure there is a firm route and a seat for you.

What is the weather going to do? +

It is Devon in April. It will do everything. There are blankets and a wood burner.

What time should I leave? +

The bar closes at midnight and the last taxis go at half past. The bacon rolls are at 10:30 and you would regret missing them.
